Upon the Lack of Organic Matter

It’s time for me to do some garden bed improvements beyond just the testing.

As the nation is looking less and less stable, I will dispense with some of my experimentation and move instead towards high food production. Though this is not the right time of year to plant, it is a fine time of year to improve the soil in my beds for spring. My 5 x 5 experiment beds I am going to leave alone, but my longer beds need some work.

A block or so down the street from me is what I am calling a “manure mine.” Back in the woods is an old pile of composted black manure that was dropped there by a dairy farmer. Since I see tomato seedlings growing fine in it, I am sure it is free of aminopyralid contamination.

Today I will press some of my children into service and we will start hauling wheelbarrows of it back to the gardens. Getting some decent organic matter in the ground should make a big difference in how things grow.
