About a month ago, I was gifted sunflower plants when I visited Zela’s Farm. The patch she had was getting too crowded and in her generous nature, she sent me home with the overflow. I tore-up a small patch of grass by our fence and got them into the ground.
 I must confess, I did not get them into the ground as soon as I planned. They sat in my sink until the following morning. I soaked the roots and hoped for the best.
 I watered them (almost) every day. About a week in, the mid-June heat was kicking and they were looking rather sad. I started to soak them even more. But what did I have to lose? They were free!
 At the end of last week we went out to play, and to my daughter’s delight, we had our first bloom. She yelled “flower!” 
Not only did I receive the sunflowers as a gift, but I will be able to save the seeds and replant next year. I might even get enough to pass along sunflowers to a friend so they too can enjoy the beauty and excitement when they start to bloom.

Sunflowers really are beautiful. When we visited the 4H nursery of our local high school program, we bought several types of them to mix into our annual garden area. Looking at them now, I’m thinking I’d like to mix them into the food forest as well, which means I better start saving seeds.
